Aqua Squad Makes A Splash in Cleveland

For those of us that have lived here our whole lives we may not realize it but, the city of Cleveland has so much to offer, especially during the summer months. The weather is (hopefully) warm, there are plenty of local events going on, and school is out – which means one thing: parents are looking for places that are both educational and fun to create memories with their kids. The Aqua Squad is hopeful of taking advantage of all three of these by promoting the Greater Cleveland Aquarium to locals throughout the summer. We’re trying our best to “take a bite” (as our sharks would say) out of everything Cleveland has to offer.

We began with the 23rd annual Marc’s Great American Rib Cook-Off, which was conveniently located right in our parking lot! The event took place from Friday to Monday over Memorial Day Weekend. Aqua Squad members talked to guests about our May Days $5 off promotion and handed out our new Octopus stickers. Interns were also accompanied by their not-so-scary BFF, Sandy The Shark! Sandy was a huge hit with the attendees at the rib cook-off, especially the younger crowd.

Our second event we attended was the annual Lake Erie North Coast Boating and Fishing Fest! For this event, we brought along our prize wheel, which kids seemed to really love as they walked away with GCA sunglasses, silly bands or stickers. Once again, Sandy made appearances at the festival to take photos and interact with guests. She is becoming quite the fan favorite around Cleveland.

The latest event we attended was Parade the Circle – a tradition that is put on by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The local attraction circles Wade Oval and features a display of bright costumes, giant puppets, stilt performers and handmade art. At this event, Aqua Squad helped guests to craft a handmade bottle cap jellyfish of their own to take home as a souvenir. Sandy also joined us and loved getting to interact with and see all of her friends, all 80,000 of them in attendance.

At select events, attendees are able to purchase two general admission tickets for a sale price of $30.00!

The Greater Cleveland Aquarium believes positive guest interaction is the highest priority, making our job as marketing interns even more important. As the Aqua Squad, we are serving as the face of the aquarium wherever we go. We are the ones going out into the community and representing what the aquarium stands for. Therefore, having the ability to actually interact with people face to face and hopefully make a great first impression only furthers the whole positive experience of visiting the Greater Cleveland Aquarium.

If you’re planning on going to any events in Cleveland this summer, be on the lookout for the Aqua Squad and don’t be afraid to say hi! Sandy doesn’t bite – and we promise we don’t either.
